Anneliese Michel was born on September 21, 1952, in Leibfing, Bavaria, West Germany, to German parents. Her parents were both Roman Catholic. She had three sisters, and would attend mass at least twice a week. She was living a fortunate and happy life with her family until at the age of 16 when she began to suffer from epileptic seizures.

She was diagnosed with psychosis, a condition caused by temporal lobe epilepsy. She said that one night she felt as if she was being strangled by the neck while being pinned down on her chest. Later on, she suffered from depression and was taken to a psychiatric hospital for treatment, She was prescribed medication, but it didn’t help. For the next 3 years this condition was recurring for her.

At the age of 20, her mental health began to decline as she began to suffer from depression and would claim she would hear voices that would often tell her that she ‘would rot in hell’ or ‘she was damned’. She was against any religious objects and would not even pass next to a statue of the Virgin Mary. She could destroy the rosary and other spiritual objects close to her. Her eyes would also turn black when staring at the Virgin Mary statue.
One of the priest named Father Alt from the Christian pilgrimage in San Damiano commented, “She approached it with the greatest hesitation, then said that the soil burned like fire and she simply could not stand it…She looked at the people who were kneeling…and it seemed to her that while praying they were gnashing their teeth…she had to avert her glance from the picture of Christ…she could no longer look at medals or pictures of saints; they sparkled so immensely that she could not stand it”.
She continued to take her medications, but her condition worsened as she became even more suicidal.
After taking psychiatric medications for some time and no change in her psyche, her family began to believe that a demon possessed her. This forced her parents to seek help from the church.

She was taken to catholic priest specialized in exorcism. Though she was rejected at first, as they advised that she continue her medication. Eventually Bishop Josef Stangl allow two priests named Ernst Alt and Wilhelm Renz to tend to her.

The Chilling Exorcism
In total there were 67 exorcisms that were performed, two times a week, with each session reaching up to 4 hours in length.
During the exorcism, she claimed to be seeing several demon faces tormenting her, and she could smell something like burnt feces around her though people around her managed to smell the same smell later times.

Her conditions worsen as she even started eating spiders and flies, and she could not sleep the entire night. She possessed extraordinary strengths as she could even squeeze an apple in small pieces with one hand.
As the exorcisms were continuing, strange demonic voices would talk and claim it could not leave her since it had a right to be in her. There was no coming back for them.
The demons that were inside Anneliese claimed to be Cain, Judas Iscariot, Hitler, Lucifer, her (Anneliese), and Fleischmann, an expelled priest from the 16th century for bad behavior.
Anneliese even gave the correct details of the priest. Despite the intense sessions, none of them seemed to work on her.

Anneliese Michel’s Condition Worsened

Later on, her condition grew much worse. She could hit her head against the wall, biting herself, forcing her parents to tie her so that she couldn’t hurt herself.

Furthermore, she stopped eating. Forced, she claimed she wasn’t allowed to eat. Despite not eating and losing a lot of weight, she possessed great strength as she could wrestle people trying to restrain her.

She became sick and weak, yet she refused to see a doctor. She had another exorcism, but this time she was only asking for absolution. She said these words the entire night, and when her parents went to see her the following day, she was found dead in her room.
After an investigation, it was determined that Anneliese’s death could’ve been prevented. The state charged her parents, Father Alt, and Father Renz with negligent homicide.
How Did Anneliese Michel Die?
Anneliese died from malnutrition and dehydration after eel-starving herself during her exorcisms.
What Languages Would Anneliese Michel Speak?
Anneliese Michel was said to speak Hebrew, Latin, Greek, German, Assyrian Neo-Aramaic and English.
